The checklist

- Chimney sweep if wood-burning fireplace is in use
- Clean gutters before leaves freeze in them
- Verify downspout extensions are 6+ feet from foundation
- Check sump pump operation and battery backup
- Inspect attic for ice dam vulnerability -- insulation depth, ventilation, bath fan terminations
- Seal exterior penetrations against rodent entry
- Drain and shut off exterior hose bibs before first freeze
- Test smoke and CO detectors
